Designs for second-order response surface models play an important role in response surface methodologies. The central composite design and Box-Behnken designs have served as popular choices for designs for second-order models when design economy and precise prediction variance are desired. The Box-Behnken design has been widely used in completely randomized experiments, split-plot experiments, and within the robust parameter design setting. This article provides a historical background for the Box-Behnken design, describes its construction, and reviews various contributions in the literature regarding the use of these designs.
