Communication training in medicine and other healthcare professions was formerly practiced as an apprenticeship model. Healthcare providers rarely received formal training in communication but instead were expected to learn on the job. Since the 1990s, training healthcare providers to communicate effectively and compassionately with patients and families has received increased attention. This focus on training has come as a consequence of the widespread acceptance that good provider–patient communication is important to quality of care and patient outcomes. This entry will first describe who receives training and when they receive it; what is taught in training; the methods of training; how individuals are assessed; and, finally, the effectiveness of training.
