Blockchain‐Based Security Solutions For IoT Systems

Although the Internet of Things ( IoT ) provides great opportunities for digitalization in many areas, IoT systems are also becoming increasingly attractive cyberattack targets. Possibilities for malicious actions are raised by the rapidly increasing number of Internet‐connected devices. There is a need for security solutions functioning with constrained IoT devices. Customized blockchain‐based IoT security could provide a solution. A blockchain stores a continuously growing linked list of data structures called blocks and is replicated in each node of a peer‐to‐peer network. Blocks are composed of records of transactions initiated by blockchain users. Unauthorized operations on IoT data can be prevented by registering all operations on IoT data as transaction records in blockchain blocks. This chapter introduces the blockchain technology and its security features and discusses its potential for securing IoT systems. The chapter presents some examples of the use of blockchain‐based solutions in various IoT environments.
