Polymeric Photosensitizers, 1. Synthesis And Photochemical Properties Of Poly[(sodium P‐styrenesulfonate)‐co‐(4‐vinylbenzyl Chloride)] Containing Rose Bengal Chromophores

The new polymeric photosensitizer poly[(sodium p-styrenesulfonate)-co-(4-vinylbenzyl chloride/rose bengal)] for singlet oxygen production in aqueous solutions was synthesized and studied. The polymer contains rose bengal (4,5,6,7-tetrachloro-2',4',5',7'-tetraiodofluorescein) chromophores covalently attached to the polymer chain. The quantum yield of singlet oxygen formation by the polymer-bound chromophore was found to be close to that determined for free rose bengal. The polymer has been shown to photosensitize oxidation reactions in aqueous media
