Avec l'augmentation de la pression sur les ressources en eau disponibles, les systemes d'irrigation dans beaucoup de pays doivent trouver des moyens d'ameliorer leurs performances. Comme tres souvent, les plus gros consommateurs, les systemes d'irrigation doivent a la fois laisser de l'eau pour les autres usages et produire plus avec moins d'eau. Le benchmarking est un outil precieux qui a fait ses preuves dans les affaires et le secteur commercial, aussi bien pour des entreprises que pour le secteur public. Cet article decrit et definit le processus de benchmarking, et poursuit en decrivant son application actuelle dans le secteur de l'irrigation et du drainage. L'article met l'accent sur la difficulte du benchmarking dans le secteur de l'irrigation et du drainage compte tenu de la complexite et de la nature specifique des sites d'irrigation et des systemes de drainage, et souligne le besoin d'une identification soigneuse des processus qui conviennent an benchmarking. Des indicateurs preliminaires de benchmarking sont discutes, et l'attention est attiree sur les efforts actuellement en cours pour appliquer et examiner cet ensemble initial. L'accent est mis sur l'effort et les ressources exiges pour provoquer les changements exiges identifies par l'exercice de benchmarking, et le role de la gestion du changement comme partie integrale du processus de benchmarking. Le papier conclut que le benchmarking fournit un outil possible pour l'amelioration de la performance du secteur d'I&D, mais exige la participation active d'individus motives avec l'appui de l'environnement plus large, englobant un encourageant secteur socio-politique et le support des principaux acteurs.
