Atopic diseases such as atopic dermatitis, allergic asthma, allergic rhinitis, and food allergy are based on genetic determinants with a reported heritability of up to 80 % (Cookson and Moffatt 2000; Vercelli 2008; Gould and Sutton 2008). Atopic diseases are typical complex, polygenic traits, which are believed to be influenced by the environment, gene–gene interactions, and multiple genetic variants.
