The umbilicus is a median depression in the abdomen, located above the pubis about one third of the distance from the pubic symphysis to the xiphoid process which is a relatively consistent position in adults. The authors will discuss the umbilical location, basic anatomic overview of the abdominal wall, vascular and lymphatic components of the periumbilical region, innervation of the periumbilical region, normal development of the umbilicus and abdominal wall, and congenital anatomic abnormalities of the umbilicus and abdominal wall. The complexity of the anatomy as it relates to the abdomen collectively is essential for the appropriate diagnosis and treatment of congenital and acquired deformities
