In this paper, we report novel superconducting neuron and variable synapse circuits for large-scale integration of neural networks. A neuron circuit is composed of the coupled SQUIDs (a single-junction SQUID with a double-junction SQUID). The quantum state of the single-junction SQUID is used as the neuron state, which is read out by the biased double-junction SQUID. A variable synapse circuit consists of a combination of shunted double-junction SQUIDs. Its output current can be digitally changed by switching bias currents. After numerical simulation, we have fabricated superconducting neural microchips using a Nb/AlOx/Nb junction technology, and successfully demonstrated their operations.
