Low Cycle Corrosion Fatigue Of High Tensile Strength Steel And Image Processing Of Fracture Surfaces

Low cycle corrosion fatigue (CF) crack growth rate of a high- tensile strength steel HT80 has been measured in ASTM synthetic sea water at free corrosion and under a cathodic potential, and 3-dimensional fracture surface analysis has been conducted by using a computer image processing technology. The CF crack growth characteristics under a cathodic potential can not be explained in terms of ΔK eff since calcareous deposits-induced wedge effect enlarges region H in hysteresis loops. The modified effective stress intensity ΔK cont proposed as a dominating mechanical parameter for CF crack growth. The crack closing simulation by means of the 3-dimensional fracture surface topography accounts for the wedge effect induced by the corrosion products or the calcareous deposits as a first approximation.
