The concept of an agricultural typology was developed during the period 1964–1976 by the Commission on Agricultural Typology of the International Geographical Union (Kostrowicki, 1964, 1975, 1977 and 1980b; Kostrowicki and Szyrmer, 1988). The concept formed the basis for the preparation of a European map of agricultural typology. The objective of this Chapter is to discuss the major trends responsible for transforming European agriculture, based on this map and several related national studies.
