Membrane contactors are commonly hollow fiber devices used as substitutes for packed towers. As such, they are alternative industrial geometries for carrying out gas absorption and liquid-liquid extraction. For gas absorption, they promise about thirty times better performance per equipment volume than conventional equipment. For liquid-liquid extraction, they exhibit about 500 times better performance than comparable exctraction towers. Nonetheless, these units are not used commercially except for special markets like blood oxygenators. The reason for their limited use seems less a matter of expense than of concern about their unproven performance under long term industrial operation.
