Abstract Effective target-organ directed drug administration is the aim of all clinical pharmacologists. Specialist drug delivery systems such as liposomes and antibodies are still at an early stage of development, but considerable data have been gathered on the system which delivers drugs intra-arterially via infusion pumps. Streptokinase has been successfully administered by this route, but other drugs have yielded disappointing results . Harry Struyker-Bourdier and colleagues argue that the apparent failure of the intra-arterial route, both clinically and experimentally, is due to a lack of relevant consideration of pharmacokinetic factors .
