The author provides an introduction to a series of papers by presenters from a panel discussion on `Technology as an Enabling Force in the Global Restructuring of the Electric Power Industry`, presented at the 1995 Aspen Institute`s Summer Program on Energy, the Environment and the Economy. The panel was charged to assess the role of technology in the ongoing deregulation, privatization and rapid expansion of the global power industry. The author discusses aero-derivative gas turbines, combined cycle systems, and the potential that other new systems and technologies offer in terms of efficieny enhancements, or more cost effective installations, and introduces the presentations from other panel members.
