Intravenous glucagon, in a double-blind study of endoscopic cholangiopancreatography, effected a marked reduction in duodenal motility. In the total group, there was but 1 procedure failure, and 1 patient not receiving glucagon developed pancreatitis. A significant decrease in frequency and magnitude of urinary amylase activity after 24 hours was noted in patients receiving glucagon compared with those receiving placebo. The authors conclude that in duodenoscopy the use of glucagon is safe, is effective in reducing duodenal motility, and may help to prevent postprocedure pancreatitis.
