Abstract Fucoidans are natural compounds derived from brown algae that are known for various biological activities. The mechanisms underlying these activities are being widely studied and are not yet fully understood. The results obtained so far have pointed to fucoidans being promising molecules capable of serving as an adjunct to anticancer therapy, or even as dietary supplementation in cancer patients. Many fucoidan-related effects such as antiproliferative, proapoptotic, antiangiogenic, and migration inhibitor may occur concurrently. Thus, the knowledge of the cellular processes involved in metabolic pathways has fundamental importance for the identification of fucoidans-related antitumor potential. Although recent advances in understanding the biological activity of fucoidans have been made with different cancer cell lines, studies with experimental bladder cancer bladder cancer models are still scarce. Thus, this review addresses the molecular structure of brown algae-derived fucoidans, extraction, mechanisms that confer biological activity, and focuses on studies involving bladder cancer. This study considers the use of fucoidans as a therapeutic possibility, supplementation of the diet of cancer patients and also with the possibility of reducing the side effects of conventional chemotherapy.
