Salicylic acid has been used as a topical agent in the treatment of a wide variety of skin disorders for over 2000 years. Today, it retains a place in the treatment of such hyperkeratotic skin disorders as warts, calluses, psoriasis, and ichthyosis. It is readily absorbed from the skin, and toxicity from percutaneous absorption is a rare but serious complication which continues to be reported. We have reviewed its chemistry, mechanism of action, clinical usage, and toxicity.
