A New Route To (±) Metoprolol

Abstract Synthesis of 4-(2-methoxyethyl)phenol (5) from phenol is described. The derived aryloxyallyl ether (6) is converted into (±)-metoprolol (10) by involving dihydroxylation reaction with OsO4 and NMO.
