Summary: Effects of glyphosate, paraquat, trifluralin and atrazine on activities of dehydrogenase, phosphatase and urease in one soil were measured. Only glyphosate at 21.6 kg/ha was found to inhibit the enzyme activities and generally the results were not statistically significant. Enzyme activity associated with micro-organisms proliferating in soil supplemented with lucerne meal was similarly not affected by the herbicides. Interpretation of results from enzyme activity measurements in soils treated with herbicides is discussed. It is proposed that effects of natural stress can be used to judge the relative importance of herbicide induced change. Resume: Effets de quelques herbicides sur l'activite d'enzymes du sol Les effets du glyphosate, du paraquat, de la trifluraline et de l'atrazine sur les activites de la deshydrogenase, de la phosphatase et de l'urease dans un sol, ont ete mesures. Il a ete constate que seul le glyphosate a 21.6 kg/ha inhibait les activites enzymatiques et les resultats n'etaient generalement pas significatifs. De meme, l'activite enzymatique, associee a celle de micro-organismes proliferant dans sol amende avec de la farine de luzerne, n'etait pas affectee par les herbicides. L'interpretation des resultats, a partir de mesures d'activite enzymalique dans des sols traites avec des herbicides, est discutee. Il apparait possible d'utiliser les effets du stress naturel pour juger de l'importance relative des changements induits par l'herbicide. Zusammenfassung Einfluss einiger Herbizide auf die Aktivitat von Bodenenzymen Es wurde der Einfluss von Glyphosat, Paraquat, Trifluralin und Atrazin auf die Aktivitat der Dehydrogenase, der Phosphatase und der Urease in einem Boden gemessen. Nur bei 21.6 kg/ha Glyphosat konnte eine Hemmung der Enzymaktivitaten beobachtet werden, und die Ergebnisse liessen sich im allgemeinen nicht statistisch sichern. Ebenso wenig wurde die Enzymaktivitat durch die Herbizide beeintrachtigt, wenn durch Zugabe von Luzernemehl die Mikroorganismen zur Vermehrung angeregt wurden. Die Interpretation von Enzymaktivitats-Messungen in Boden, die mit Herbiziden behandelt wurden, werden diskutiert. Es wird vorgeschlagen, die Wirkung naturlicher Stressituationen fur die Beurteilung von Herbizideffekten heranzuziehen.
