Pleural effusion is a frequent manifestation in respiratory medicine and is a major diagnostic and therapeutic problem. In the United States more than 1.5 million patients each year suffer from pleural effusion. A large number of diseases may cause pleural effusion, with the majority of cases resulting from congestive heart failure, pneumonia, and cancer (1). This article is protected by copyright.
