Acceptance of sonar is now becoming general. Many units besides our own are increasingly committed and some have already overtaken us. We examine over 2,000 cases a year at the Queen Mother's Hospital and about 1,000 in the X-ray department of the Westem Infirmary. Equipment is now fully operational in the Southern General Hospital (about 1,200 cases in the last two years) and at the Royal Maternity Hospital; the Royal Infirmary in Glasgow and the unit in Paisley are also establishing departments. As will be seen from Table 1, biparietal cephalometry measurements and placentography account for three-quarters of the work. The present applications of sonar in obstetrics can be divided into two main parts, namely early and later pregnancy.
