a Quality Control Sample of files. These files are to be 60 in number-one for each major culture cluster of the world. The plan for such a Quality Control Sample is set forth above, pp. 64-68. One important element in this plan is that of probability sampling. The Quality Control Sample is to be a stratified random sample from a bibliographically defined universe. This sampling plan meets a long-felt need. A leading assumption of cross-cultural surveys is that their samples are representative of the universe of societies sampled.
