A series of experiments using a research design for small ns investigated the effects of instructions for encoding of prose passages on accuracy of recognition test. Results indicated no consistent relationship between instructions for encoding and subsequent accurate recognition. Assumptions underlying the use of statistics for large ns and implications for the design of research in cognitive psychology are discussed.
