Everyone knows the feeling: you just found the perfect piece of news about a subject you are researching — perhaps an in-depth reported piece in The New Yorker, perhaps an interview in The New York Times, or a op-ed column in the Washington Post.
But then … Paywall! As students it can be hard justifying multiple costly subscriptions, especially if you only need access to a couple articles once in a while.

In this post we take a look at how to bypass a couple different news sites paywalls.
Is this morally OK? Depends on how you use it, of course. But in our opinion it doesn’t really matter if you wait a week to get another 10 free articles so you can read one link, or use a different device, or just bypass the paywall on your current device. Of course we think that news sites should make money, and that if possible one should subscribe to news sources one trusts and relies on.

Different newspapers will have different limits ranging between 3 to 10 free articles per month. Once you hit the limit, they will invite you to upgrade if you want to continue reading.

Here you can find a simple and easy way to bypass the paywalls different newspapers impose and therefore let you read as many articles as you want for free without having to subscribe to any of them (takes 2 minutes to do):

You will simply need to install Bypass Paywalls, a web browser extension to help bypass paywalls for selected sites. Available both for Chrome and Firefox.

Chrome Installation Instructions:

  • Download this repo as a ZIP file from GitHub.
