Bench stable and can be handled in solid form in the atmosphere. Solubility: commonly used in dichloromethane, dichloroethane, benzene, and toluene. Also soluble in THF, diethyl ether, and tert-butyl methyl ether. Some applications do not require rigorously dry or degassed solvents. For demanding applications, metathesis reactions that require longer reaction times, or reactions that are heated for a prolonged period, degassed or distilled solvents are highly recommended. Form supplied in: free-flowing, dark purple microcrystals. Preparative Methods: 1, 2 reagent is commercially available (Sigma–Aldrich Chemical Co.). Most applications use the commercial reagent. Handling, Storage, and Precautions: the microcrystalline reagent can be handled in the air. The Grubbs' complex should be stored for long periods under inert atmosphere in the dark. Degradation can be identified using 31P NMR (δ + 31.41 ppm (CD2Cl2)).
