Reverse logistics deals with the organization of the various processes which are necessary for returning waste materials and used goods to their producers resp. into the economic cycle. In the first section of this paper, the impact of reverse logistics on the improvement of the economic and ecological performance of an economy is discussed. Compared to the traditional flow economy, such a closed-loop economy implies savings of raw materials and energy on the input side and of landfill capacity on the output side of the production process, so that the economic and ecological efficiency of the enterprises and of the economy as a whole can be improved. This generates on one hand advances towards a sustainable development, on the other hand considerable cost reductions to some or even all of the enterprises involved.
