Publisher Summary This chapter discusses the translocation of sucrose and oligosaccharide. The occurrence of sucrose and its nonreducing derivatives as the major transport sugars offers several distinct advantages to the plant. One of the most impressive features of phloem transport is the quantity of solutes transported through the sieve tubes. The chapter presents a working model of the current status of export leaf physiology and some of the areas. It also presents the evidence that photosynthetically derived carbon is partitioned into starch and sucrose and that the sucrose can be further partitioned in to transport and nontransport pools. The sucrose in the transport pool enters the apoplast close to the phloem and is selectively accumulated into the sieve element-companion cell complex. Sucrose and K+ loading into the phloem may be coupled to the cotransport protons driven by a plasmalemma ATPase. The resulting increase in osmotic pressure within the sieve tubes generates the driving force for the mass flow of assimilates from the exporting leaf.
