Publisher Summary This chapter discusses about the plasma lipoproteins and the adipose tissue. The overall concepts of lipoprotein structure—based on compositional, electron micrographical, and physical investigations—reveal that the chylomicrons are spherical and consist of a core of triglyceride surrounded by a monolayer of surface-active lipid, which is 25–30 nm in depth. Although the formation of these heterogeneous classes of lipoproteins is independent of the presence of serum, it is suggested that they can help in the formation in vivo of high-density lipoproteins (HDL) with an overall composition predominantly of protein (50%) with phospholipid, cholesterol, and triglyceride present at 25, 20, and 5%, respectively. Thus, it is clear that at least two major plasma lipoprotein interactions potentially involve adipose tissue, either of the white or brown variety. The metabolic conversion of chylomicrons to remnants and of very low-density lipoprotein to low-density lipoprotein by the extra hepatic tissues involves adipose tissue lipoprotein lipase activity as a major contributor to the overall process. Further, the release and uptake of cholesterol from and to circulating lipoproteins, and the interchange of the sterol with the intracellular pools present in tissues—of which adipose tissue is again a major contributor—represents a further important area for consideration.
