Abstract Sodium borohydride reduced the ester group of the epoxides 1 or one cyano group of 2 selectively within 5 minutes to give new hydroxy -or amino- functionalized epoxides. This unusual reduction of a cyano group has been extended to other α,α-dicyano derivatives.
