At its eleventh annual conference held in Grenoble, France, in October 2001, RESER, the European Network for Research on Services and Space, discussed the fifth annual survey on trends in services research in a number of European countries where the network has members. A past president, Peter Daniels, conceived this trans-national survey of the literature as a way to identify both new and predominating themes in services research. In 1998 it was decided that the survey should cover one specific subject each year, rather than services research in general, which seemed too wide a field. It was therefore decided to link it to the theme of the RESER conference each year. To be valid, such an exercise needs strong contributions from the different RESER teams, but as Ronald MacKay of DG Enterprise observed, at present it is the only source of feedback on the state of art in the European scientific community. It is therefore of interest to a large variety of persons – researchers, students, policy makers and European administrators – who do not have easy access to papers written in so many different languages. The authors of the country contributions to the report are, Lars Fuglsang (Copenhagen) for Denmark, Francesca Canti for Italy, Metka Stare (Ljubljana) for Slovenia, Ying Qui and John Bryson (Birmingham) for the United Kingdom, José A. Camacho and Mercedes Rodriguez (Grenada) for Spain, Tor Selstad and Peter Sjøholt (Bergen) for Norway, Gerhard Fuchs (Stuttgart) and Christof Ellger (Berlin) for Germany, and Louis M. Boulianne (Lausanne) for Switzerland. Each contributor identified a large number of papers in the literature, since virtually all services are in some way or another affected by developments in information and computing technology (ICT).
