Vena contracta effects and the onset of separation associated with the acceleration of a liquid into the gap between closely-spaced parallel plates both show an unusual dependence on gap width h and flow rate Q. The onset of macroscopic separation at the circular inlet (radius R0) to the gap was characterised by a reduced Reynolds number hQ/4 pi R02v. This showed a regular curvilinear dependence on h when the flow was turbulent. The phenomena are relevant to the action of such devices as radial diffusers and poppet-type valves used for homogenizing emulsions.
