MICHAEL D. MUMFORDThe University of OklahomaSAMUEL T. HUNTERThe Pennsylvania State UniversityCRISTINA L. BYRNEThe University of OklahomaBledow, Frese, Anderson, Erez, and Farr(2009) seek to resolve a key problem thatconfronts all of us interested in creativ-ity and innovation in organizations—theunderlying phenomena do not fit togetherinto a coherent whole. Although thislack of coherence, within and cross-levelconflicts in the variables influencing cre-ativity and innovation, have long beenrecognized (Mumford & Hunter, 2005), res-olution of these inconsistencies is importantfor both theoretical and practical reasons.Bledow et al. propose a fundamental con-cept (Hughes, 1989) that they believe willresolve these inconsistencies—the dialec-tic method or ‘‘integrate and manage’’approach. Although this fundamental is,perhaps, plausible, we believe that attemptsto understand creativity and innovation inorganizations should be based on anotherfundamental: cognition.
