The principles of development of Visual Environment for Physical Modeling (VEPM) are considered in the paper. The main ideas of VEPM are the use of geometrical objects for building a space structure of physical models and setting distributions of physical properties among such geometrical structures. For such a geometry of distributed properties any mathematical algorithm can be applied, whose implementation is an external to VEPM plug-in. Due to this approach the VEPM covers a wide range of physical phenomena and can be used by people, having no specific mathematical background. VEPM significantly decreases the time between the development of a physical model, its investigation and the understanding of a solution. A concrete example of the proposed approach for using VEPM in metamaterials design is given.
